Treatment is not the problem. Surprise is.
Most Gemstones Are Treated
Many gemstones are treated, and treatment is not automatically bad. Heat treatment of sapphire and ruby has been practised for centuries and is accepted throughout the trade. Oiling of emerald is so standard that an unoiled emerald is the exception.
What matters is whether a treatment is stable, suitable for the piece, disclosed in writing, and reflected in the price. An undisclosed treatment is a problem regardless of what it is. A disclosed one almost never is.
What Each One Does
Heat
Common for sapphire and ruby, improving colour and clarity. Stable, permanent and widely accepted when disclosed. Fine untreated stones command a substantial premium.
Oiling
Common for emerald. Oil fills surface-reaching fissures and improves appearance. Not permanent, so it may need renewing over decades, and it rules out ultrasonic cleaning.
Resin filling
Used in some emeralds and other stones. More significant than traditional oiling and should be understood clearly, as it affects both value and repair options.
Diffusion
Introduces colour into the surface or near-surface of a stone. Because the colour is not throughout, recutting or heavy repolishing can remove it. Must always be disclosed.
Irradiation
Used to alter or enhance colour, most familiarly on blue topaz, where nearly all material is irradiated. Stable and safe, but disclosure matters.
Dyeing
Adds or improves colour, often in porous materials. Generally less desirable for fine jewellery unless clearly understood and priced accordingly.
Coating
A surface treatment that changes appearance but can wear or be damaged. It will not survive repolishing and may not survive normal wear.
Fracture filling
Improves visible clarity by filling breaks, most significantly in ruby and diamond. It affects durability and restricts cleaning and repair, and should be reflected in a much lower price.
What to Ask About Any Stone

Treatment Questions
Is a treated gemstone worth less?
Usually, yes, and appropriately so. An untreated fine sapphire can cost several times a heated one of identical appearance. That premium is for rarity rather than beauty, which is worth remembering if beauty is what you are buying.
Should I avoid treated stones?
Not at all. If you avoided every treated stone you would rule out the large majority of sapphire, ruby, emerald, tanzanite and blue topaz on the market. The distinction that matters is disclosed against undisclosed, not treated against untreated.
How can I tell if a stone has been treated?
Frequently you cannot by eye, which is precisely why reports exist. A respected laboratory report will state treatments. Anyone selling a significant coloured stone without being able to speak to its treatment is either uninformed or evasive.
Do treatments wear off?
Some can. Oiling is not permanent and may need renewing over decades. Coating can wear or scratch away. Heat and irradiation are permanent. Diffusion is permanent unless the stone is recut. It is a fair question to ask about any specific stone.
Does treatment affect how I clean my ring?
Yes, sometimes significantly. Oiled emeralds, fracture-filled rubies and coated stones should never go in an ultrasonic cleaner or be exposed to heat. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is safe for almost everything.
