Amethyst is purple quartz, and its colour comes from iron and natural irradiation. Once as valuable as ruby, it became affordable only when vast Brazilian deposits were found in the nineteenth century — the quality never changed, just the supply.

At 7 on the Mohs scale it is wearable but will scratch over years of daily contact; a bezel or halo helps.
