A Lab-Grown Diamond Is Not a Lesser Diamond
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. They have the same chemical and optical nature as natural diamonds, graded by the same laboratories on the same Four Cs. They are grown in controlled conditions rather than formed in the earth.
The advantage is value. For the same budget a lab-grown diamond will usually allow a larger stone, higher colour, higher clarity or a more ambitious design. The trade-off is rarity: a lab-grown diamond does not carry the geological scarcity of a natural one. For some people that matters deeply. For others it does not matter at all.
Neither answer is wrong. What matters is knowing which of the two you are buying, and why.
The Honest Comparison
Both are real diamonds and both can be beautiful. The differences that matter are origin, rarity and price, not appearance.

Natural Diamonds Are Often Best For
Do not assume natural automatically means better. A poorly cut natural diamond will not look better than a beautifully cut lab-grown one just because it came out of the ground.
Traditional engagement rings
Where the story of the stone matters as much as the stone. Natural origin carries weight for many people, and no argument about specification changes that.
Heirloom-feeling designs
A piece intended to be handed down sits more comfortably with a naturally formed stone, particularly alongside antique cuts and vintage settings.
Where rarity is the point
If geological scarcity is what the wearer values, that is a legitimate reason on its own and lab-grown will never satisfy it.
Smaller but beautifully chosen stones
A modest natural diamond chosen well will outperform a larger, compromised one. Natural does not have to mean expensive.
Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Often Best For
Larger engagement rings
The clearest case. Where a natural diamond of the size you want would require too much compromise elsewhere, lab-grown removes the problem entirely.
High-specification white stones
D to F colour and VVS clarity become affordable rather than aspirational, which matters if the wearer particularly wants an icy white stone in platinum.
Modern designs
Contemporary settings with several matched stones, or ambitious bespoke work, where buying natural throughout would push the budget somewhere unreasonable.
Stepping around mining questions
No mining and a clearer chain of custody. Not automatically greener in every respect, since growing diamonds uses energy, but for many people the absence of mining is the deciding factor.
What to Watch
- Cut still matters, on bothNot all lab-grown diamonds are equally beautiful. A bad cut is a bad cut whatever the origin.
- Reports still matter for centre stonesBoth should carry an independent grading report at any meaningful size.
- Very high clarity may not be worth paying forVVS on a lab-grown stone costs more and looks identical to VS on the hand.
- Be realistic about resaleLab-grown has no established secondary market. Buy it to wear and enjoy.
- Disclosure should always be clearAny jeweller who is vague about which you are buying is telling you something.
- Watch the price jumps on naturalJust under a round carat weight often buys a much better stone for the money.
How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Graded
In October 2025 GIA moved lab-grown diamond reporting to a Premium or Standard assessment framework rather than the traditional Four Cs nomenclature.
Most lab-grown diamonds currently on the market still hold pre-October 2025 reports, or reports from independent laboratories such as IGI or GCAL, using the traditional wording. That means you will see both styles of report in circulation for some time. We provide independent laboratory grading reports with centre stones either way, and will explain which framework a given report uses.
Natural and Lab-Grown Questions
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, optically and physically identical to mined diamonds, and are graded by the same independent laboratories on the same criteria. The only difference is origin, and price.
Can anyone tell the difference by looking?
No. Not a jeweller, not a gemmologist, not with a loupe. Distinguishing them requires specialist laboratory equipment that detects growth patterns invisible to the eye. This is precisely why disclosure and reports matter.
Will a lab-grown diamond hold its value?
Natural diamonds have a far more established secondary market. Lab-grown prices have fallen as production has scaled, and there is no reliable resale route. Buy lab-grown to wear and enjoy rather than as an investment. That is true of most jewellery, but it is especially true here.
How much cheaper is lab-grown?
It varies with size and specification, but the gap is substantial and widens as the stone gets larger. In practice, a budget that buys a well-cut natural diamond will usually buy a considerably larger lab-grown one at a similar or better grade.
Are lab-grown diamonds more ethical?
They avoid mining entirely, which for many people is the deciding factor. They are not automatically greener in every respect, because growing diamonds uses significant energy. All our natural diamonds are guaranteed conflict-free under the Kimberley Process. It is a personal judgement rather than a simple right answer.
Do lab-grown diamonds scratch or cloud over time?
No. They are 10 on the Mohs scale, exactly as natural diamonds are, and they do not cloud, discolour or degrade. A lab-grown diamond will look the same in fifty years as it does today, given the same care.
Can I mix natural and lab-grown in one ring?
Technically yes, and some people do use lab-grown accent stones around a natural centre. We would always document exactly which is which, because a future valuer or insurer will need to know.
