When a straight band will not do, and what shaping actually involves
Made to Follow a Specific Ring
A shaped band is cut, curved or contoured so it follows the line of a particular engagement ring rather than running straight across the finger. A fitted band goes further still, designed around that ring's exact geometry.
Shaping is not a compromise or a repair. On a low-set solitaire, a trilogy, or an east-west stone, a well-shaped band is the only way the pair will ever sit properly, and done well it looks entirely deliberate.
Six Situations That Call for Shaping
Low-profile baskets
Where the setting sits directly on the finger, a straight band cannot slide underneath and leaves a wedge-shaped gap. This is the most common reason for shaping.
Halos and clusters
The surrounding stones project outwards at finger level, so a straight band meets the halo rather than the shank.
Trilogy and multi-stone
Side stones extend along the finger in both directions, so the band has to step around a longer footprint.
Split shoulders and cathedrals
Where the band divides or sweeps upward, a straight band meets it at an awkward angle rather than flush.
East-west and unusual orientations
A stone set across the finger rather than along it creates a footprint no standard band accounts for.
Existing heirloom rings
Older rings frequently have geometry no modern band matches. Shaping is often the only way to pair with an inherited piece.
How Much Shaping
Most rings need less than people expect. We would always try the least intervention that works.
A gentle curve
A shallow dip across the centre of the band, enough to clear a low basket. Subtle, and often invisible when the rings are worn together.
A contoured notch
A shaped recess following the outline of the setting more closely. Used where the ring's footprint is larger or more irregular.
A fully fitted band
Designed around the exact geometry, sometimes wrapping a low setting or cradling a trilogy. Made from CAD, to that ring only.
How a Shaped Band Is Made
Photographs first
From above, from the side and at a slight angle. Between them these show whether the basket protrudes below the shank and how much clearance there is.
Measurement or impression
For complex geometry we may ask to see the ring, or take a wax impression, so the shaping is matched to reality rather than to a photograph.
CAD render
You see the pair together from every angle before anything is cast. Edits are free, and this is where most refinement happens.

What Shaping Costs You
A shaped band is harder to resize than a straight one, because altering the size changes the curve and can throw the fit out. If shaping is likely, it is worth being confident about the finger size before committing.
It also looks odd worn alone, which matters if the engagement ring will sometimes come off. And on a stone-set band, the shaping has to be planned alongside stone placement so no setting is left vulnerable at the narrowest part of the contour.
None of these is a reason not to do it. They are reasons to decide early rather than late.
Shaped Band Questions
How much more does a shaped band cost?
It varies with how much shaping is needed. A gentle curve adds relatively little; a fully fitted band designed from CAD around a complex ring is genuinely bespoke work and priced accordingly. We will always quote before any work begins.
Can you shape a band to a ring you did not make?
Yes, and we do it regularly, including for inherited and antique rings. Send photographs from above, the side and at an angle to start. For unusual geometry we may want to see the ring itself.
Will a shaped band look strange on its own?
Somewhat, yes. The curve exists to accommodate another ring, so worn alone it reads as incomplete. If the engagement ring will regularly come off, a straight band with a small gap may be the better compromise.
Can a shaped band be resized?
With difficulty, because changing the size alters the curve. We would rather get the size right first. If you are between sizes or your fingers change noticeably, tell us and we will factor it into the design.
Is a fitted band the same as a bridal set?
No. A bridal set is two rings designed and sold together from the start. A fitted band is made afterwards to match a ring that already exists, which is harder work and the more common situation.
