A solitaire engagement ring worn on the hand

Proposing in Secret

Finding the size, the style and the moment without giving it away

Chapter 10 of 15

Keeping the Surprise

Almost Everything Can Be Done Discreetly

Most of the difficulty in a surprise proposal is practical rather than emotional: you need a size, a sense of their taste, and several weeks of lead time, all without explaining why.

All three are solvable. We do this constantly, and the packaging, the correspondence and the delivery can all be arranged so nothing arrives at your door announcing itself.

The Size

Four Discreet Methods

If you must guess, err slightly large. Resizing down is far easier than resizing up, and a ring that will not go on is not wearable at all.

Borrow a ring they already wear

Ideally from the same finger. If not, tell us which finger it came from and we can estimate the difference reasonably well.

Take an impression

Press the ring into a bar of soap or a piece of Blu Tack and bring us the impression. The ring goes straight back within minutes and the inside diameter is preserved accurately.

Measure while they sleep

Wrap a thin paper strip around the base of the finger and mark the overlap. Less accurate than a borrowed ring, but far better than a guess.

Order the free sizer discreetly

Our free ring sizer arrives in plain packaging with nothing identifying us on the outside, precisely so it can be sent to a shared address.

The Style

Six Ways to Learn Their Taste Without Asking

  • Photograph their jewelleryMetal tone and scale tell us more than any description. Send images rather than adjectives.
  • Note what they never wearThe untouched pieces are as informative as the daily ones, and usually the reason is comfort.
  • Save anything they have pointed atA ring admired in passing months ago is a stronger signal than anything said directly.
  • Recruit one person, not fiveTheir closest friend or sibling usually knows. Engagement conversations travel fast, so keep the circle tiny.
  • Send us a mood boardSaved images, screenshots, anything. We can read a great deal from a few pictures.
  • Ask about someone else's ringWhat they say about a friend's engagement ring is a direct statement about their own taste.
How We Handle It

Discretion as Standard

We never share details with anyone but you. Correspondence can go to whichever address or email you prefer, the ring can be packaged plainly, and we can hold delivery until a date that suits.

If you would rather we did not email at all, tell us and we will use WhatsApp or phone only. None of this is unusual and none of it costs anything.

The One Thing You Cannot Rush

Leave Enough Time

At least five weeks is ideal for a bespoke ring, and up to two months is sensible for anything complex. Two to three weeks is occasionally possible for simpler designs but it should never be the plan.

Tell us your proposal date at first contact and we will be honest about what is achievable, including saying when a simpler design made well is the better answer than a complex one rushed.

The Pressure Valve

Propose First, Design Together

If choosing alone is paralysing you, propose with a temporary silver band and design the real ring together afterwards. We offer this routinely and credit the placeholder against the final purchase.

It removes the sizing problem, the taste problem and the timing problem in one move. A surprising number of people are relieved when we suggest it.

Common Questions

Questions About Keeping It Secret

How do I find their ring size without asking?

Borrow a ring they wear and have it measured, or press it into soap or Blu Tack and bring us the impression. You can also order our free sizer, which arrives in plain packaging. If all else fails, propose with a placeholder.

Can you send things discreetly?

Yes, as standard. Plain packaging with nothing identifying us, correspondence to whichever address or email you choose, and delivery held until a date that suits. Tell us the constraints and we will work around them.

How far ahead should I start?

At least five weeks for a bespoke ring, ideally longer. If your date is sooner, tell us immediately rather than hoping. We would far rather make something simple beautifully than something complex badly.

What if I want it to be a surprise but get the ring right?

Propose with a placeholder, then design the real ring together. You keep the surprise entirely and remove every risk about size and taste. It is the single best answer we know to this problem.

Can I pay without it showing on a shared account?

Talk to us. We offer transparent interest-free payment options and can discuss timing and method. We cannot control what appears on your statement, but we can be flexible about when payments fall.
