Emerald Gemstones
Emerald is green beryl, coloured by chromium and vanadium, and prized for a depth of colour few other stones approach. Almost every emerald contains inclusions — the trade calls them the jardin, or garden — and they are read as character rather than fault.
At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale but with natural internal fractures, emerald wants a protective setting and a little care; a bezel or a halo is the sensible route. We buy loose so you can choose the stone first and the setting second — see our diamond and gemstone guide for how colour, cut and clarity are judged outside the diamond scale, or which gemstones survive everyday wear if it is going to be worn daily. All our stones carry independent laboratory certification and transparent pricing, and our London team will talk you through any of them with no obligation.
