Opal Gemstones
Opal is hydrated silica, and its play-of-colour comes from light diffracting through microscopic silica spheres — every stone is optically unique. No two opals are alike.
At 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and containing water, opal is a stone for protective settings and occasional wear rather than a daily engagement ring. We buy loose so you can choose the stone first and the setting second — see our diamond and gemstone guide for how colour, cut and clarity are judged outside the diamond scale, or which gemstones survive everyday wear if it is going to be worn daily. Each stone is independently graded and openly priced, ready to set into one of our settings or a piece designed from scratch with you.
