Spinel Gemstones

Spinel spent centuries being mistaken for ruby — the Black Prince's Ruby in the Imperial State Crown is a spinel — and is now collected in its own right for its clarity, its brilliance and its cobalt blues and hot pinks.

At 8 on the Mohs scale, spinel is a genuinely practical alternative to sapphire and is almost never treated. We buy loose so you can choose the stone first and the setting second — see our diamond and gemstone guide for how colour, cut and clarity are judged outside the diamond scale, or which gemstones survive everyday wear if it is going to be worn daily. Every stone is independently certified, priced transparently, and can be set into any ring in our collection or into a design of your own.
