Full, Half, Three-Quarter or Quarter Eternity: How Many Diamonds Do You Actually Need?
Full, Half, Three-Quarter or Quarter Eternity: How Many Diamonds Do You Actually Need?

We make eternity rings in every coverage, so we have no stake in steering you towards more diamonds or fewer. This is simply the guidance we give across the table, and for most people it points the same way: half is usually the sweet spot, and here is exactly why.

A diamond-set wedding or eternity ring can be set with stones part of the way around the band or all the way around it. That single choice, how far the diamonds go, affects comfort, practicality, resizing and cost far more than most people expect. Here is an honest look at full, three-quarter, half and quarter eternity, and why the answer is rarely full.

At a glance

  • Half eternity: the sweet spot for most people. Full sparkle on show, comfort and resizing kept.
  • Full eternity: beautiful, but cannot be resized and puts stones under the finger.
  • Quarter and third: a lighter touch of sparkle, kindest to the budget.
  • The clincher: from normal viewing angles, a good half eternity looks almost the same as full.

The coverage options

Coverage Stones Resizable? Best for
Full eternity Diamonds all the way around No — no plain metal to adjust Those sure their size won’t change; dress or anniversary rings
Three-quarter Diamonds around roughly three-quarters Limited More sparkle than half, some plain metal kept
Half eternity Diamonds across the whole visible top Yes Most people — full sparkle on show, comfort and resizing kept
Quarter A lighter touch of diamonds across the top Yes The kindest to the budget; a subtle touch of sparkle

Why half is usually the sweet spot

Start with how a ring is actually seen and worn. The top of your finger is what shows; the underside spends its life pressed against your other fingers and everything you hold. A half eternity sets diamonds across the entire visible top of the band, so from normal viewing angles it looks almost the same as a fully set ring. The plain metal underneath is where a full eternity would put stones that you cannot see anyway, and that brings us to comfort.

Comfort and wear

Diamonds set on the underside of a ring take a surprising beating. They meet keys, steering wheels, gym equipment and the simple friction of your other fingers, and they collect soap and hand cream in the settings. Metal on the underside is kinder to the hand and to the ring: smoother to wear, easier to keep clean, and with nothing to knock loose where you cannot see it. For a ring worn every single day, that plain underside is a quiet advantage, not a compromise.

The resizing truth

This is the point that changes minds. A full eternity ring cannot be resized. Because diamonds run the whole way around, there is no plain metal to cut and rejoin, so the size it is made is the size it stays. Fingers, however, change over a lifetime: with warmth and cold, with age, with pregnancy, with the years. A half eternity leaves plain metal at the back that a jeweller can adjust, so the ring can move with you. Choosing full means committing to a fixed size for good, which is a real consideration for a ring meant to last a lifetime.

When full eternity is the right call

None of this means full eternity is wrong. It is the right choice for some people, and we make beautiful ones. It suits those confident their size will not change, or who are happy to accept that trade-off; it is glorious as a dress or anniversary ring worn less than daily; and some people simply love the idea of diamonds with no beginning and no end, which is a lovely sentiment and a perfectly good reason. If that is you, choose it with open eyes about resizing and wear.

A note on the stones themselves

Whatever coverage you choose, the diamonds in a set band are best kept to a consistent, well-matched quality. For the small stones in our bands, our house standard is G to I colour and VS clarity, which looks bright and white along the finger without paying for grades the eye cannot read at that size. Consistency across the stones matters more than any single grade.

Frequently asked questions

Is a half or full eternity ring better?

For most people, half. It shows full sparkle from the front, keeps the underside comfortable and clean, and can be resized. Full eternity is beautiful but cannot be resized and sets stones where they take more wear.

Can a full eternity ring be resized?

No. Because the diamonds run all the way around, there is no plain metal to adjust, so it stays the size it was made. This matters over a lifetime, as fingers change.

Do half and full eternity rings look different on the hand?

Barely, from the front. A well-made half eternity sets stones across the whole visible top of the band, so at normal viewing angles it looks almost the same as a full eternity.

What quality diamonds are used in eternity rings?

For small set stones, our house standard is G to I colour and VS clarity, which looks bright and white along the band. Consistent, well-matched stones matter more than any single top grade at this size.
